The ZICOFE Story

A journey of determination and growth in Central Uganda since 1984

41 Years of Excellence

In 1984, riding on a motorbike along a dusty dirt road, Rose Nakayenga Kato and her late husband, Enock Kisuule Kato, sought out the perfect land for cultivating coffee. They found it – a parcel of rich and promising land – in the rural town of Zigoti, in central Uganda.

They acquired it, and so Zigoti Coffee was born. Rose and Enock dedicated themselves to nurturing their dream, tirelessly working the land to establish their coffee farm, mill, roastery and even a beautiful hotel, Enro Hotel.

Natural Processing - Image 1

Natural Processing

Our natural processing method involves drying coffee cherries in the sun with the fruit still intact. This traditional method produces coffee with bold, fruity flavors and a full body.

The cherries are spread on raised beds and turned regularly over 2-3 weeks until they reach optimal moisture content. This careful process ensures the development of complex flavor profiles that our customers love.

Washed Processing - Image 1

Washed Processing

In our washed processing method, coffee cherries are pulped to remove the fruit, then fermented and washed to remove remaining mucilage. This process results in a clean, bright cup with pronounced acidity and clarity of flavor.

The beans are then dried on raised beds until they reach 11-12% moisture content. Our washed coffees are known for their exceptional clarity and vibrant flavor notes that highlight the unique terroir of our growing regions.
